Wheeler Opera House Director Mike Harrington on Bold Programming and Community in Aspen

Five questions for Mike Harrington, executive director of the Wheeler Opera House.

By Jen Murphy

You came to Aspen from New York City. How has the Aspen audience informed your programming?

The level of cultural sophistication is just as high. People know their stuff, whether it’s classical music or theater. Our patrons want to experience the best of what the world has to offer, and I’m ready to deliver it. My intent isn’t for the Wheeler to become a super progressive, avant-garde space. I see a unique opportunity to be a space where established artists can take risks somewhat out of the spotlight but still in front of a worldly audience.

Since your appointment in 2024, you have nearly doubled the number of annual performances. Has that allowed you to diversify the lineup?

We had 230 active days throughout 2025. My goal is to hit 250. I have a passion for interdisciplinary presenting: comedy, film, theater, dance. We’re embracing it all. Art doesn’t have to fit in one lane. In April, for example, we hosted Miwa Matreyek, an L.A.–based artist whose performance combines video collages with animation and shadow puppetry to create a multimedia exploration of climate change.

Has Aspen’s setting inspired you to explore any new mediums or projects?

There is a clear interest in pushing your body to extremes to accomplish incredible feats of athleticism in the mountains. I’m trying to explore projects that connect those dots, like bringing in circus artists.

You’ve made significant efforts to involve the community. Why is that important to you?

It would be foolish if we didn’t invest in artists who are rooted here—they help define the vibe of the local culture. Last May, we launched Roaring Fork Rising, a weekend series that spotlights local artists from the valley.

You’ve also brought in major stars like Jerry Seinfeld and Kate Hudson. Who is on your dream list?

I think a John Legend solo concert would be amazing in this room, and Paul McCartney has been performing at some smaller venues in New York. Taking artists of that caliber and bringing them to a venue like this makes for a really incredible experience.
